CONGRESSMAN BACHUS ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR PARKS PROJECTS IN JEFFERSON COUNTY

WASHINGTON – Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) announced the approval of $1.7 million funding for three parks and recreation projects in Jefferson County.

The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2008 federal budget approved by the House today.

"This funding is a good investment in the health and economy of the Birmingham region. Companies looking to locate in a community are increasingly looking for recreational opportunities for their families," Bachus said.

The bill provides for the following funding.

  • Red Mountain Park, $1.22 million. Land acquisition and development of 1100 acre multiple-use park and greenway providing health, recreational, and economic development benefits.
  • Railroad Reservation Park, $245,000. Development project to reclaim former industrial area adjacent to new downtown intermodal transportation center.
  • Polly Reed Greenway and Pedestrian Walkway, Center Point, $245,000. Assist with development of a health, fitness, and streetscape project to serve as a gateway to the Five Mile Creek Greenway.

The budget legislation has been approved by both houses of Congress and awaits the signature of the President.
