6TH DISTRICT TO BENEFIT FROM HUD GRANTS

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has released several grant notifications from which the 6th district will directly benefit, Congressman Spencer Bachus today announced.

Specifically, that state of Alabama will received $225,000 for the American Dream Downpayment Initiative, which promotes homeownership opportunities for low-income and minority households; $25 million in the Community Development Block Grant funds, which aims to develop viable urban communities and expand economic opportunities; $1.4 million for the Emergency Shelter Grants program, which provides monies for improving the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters; $15.9 million for the HOME program, which aims to expand the supply of affordable housing for low-income families; and $1.1 million in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, which provides assistance to governments and organizations for projects benefiting low-income persons with HIV/AIDS.

Additionally, the city of Tuscaloosa will receive an additional $947,000 in CDBG funds and $603,000 in HOME monies.

“These grants will expand opportunities for homeownership and increase the quality of life for the most vulnerable of our citizens.  It is my hope that the benefits received from these programs will put deserving families on the road to greater financial and personal security,” Bachus said.
