WASHINGTON – Congressman Spencer Bachus today joined Congressmen Joe Wilson (SC), Eric Cantor (VA) and Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (TN) in a press conference urging the “Blue Dog” Democrats to practice what they preach regarding deficit reduction. Congressman Bachus issued the following statement:
“It is time to put partisan politics aside and do what is best for the future of America. In years past, we have been successful in joining forces with Democrats who value fiscal responsibility above political grandstanding. We hope to have the same cooperation this year.
“The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 achieves a net savings of more than $53 billion in mandatory spending programs. In the Financial Services Committee alone we achieved a net savings of $470 million over five years.
“The Deficit Reduction Act will help control and sustain our largest mandatory spending programs while ensuring they continue to help those in need.
“Now is the time for members of the Blue Dog Coalition to vote their convictions. Do not bow to pressure from the Democratic leadership. Join with us in reforming government spending programs and saving American taxpayers millions of dollars.”
