BIRMINGHAM - Congressman Spencer Bachus today addressed the Birmingham Kiwanis Club – the largest Kiwanis Club in the world – and gave a “call to action” for community involvement in pivotal local issues. Congressman Bachus discussed the role of civic, community and business leaders in making the community’s goals a reality.
“The leadership of these men and women in our communities is vitally important to ensure our Senators and I continue to achieve the things we have for the Birmingham area. The success of the Cahaba NWR, other recreation/conservation developments and properties, and the continuing work on Corridor X are projects that an active community impacted positively. The task force created by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce for promotion of Corridor X is a prime example of this,” Congressman Bachus said.
“Let’s not lose our momentum with the completion of the Corridor-X interchange at I-65. Our communities must commit to ongoing and future projects the same way we did with these projects. That same commitment is needed for the Northern Beltline and other high density projects. We need people who will contact the state transportation department and demand we receive our fair share of funds to complete these vital projects. We need people who will contact the media to ensure the public gets the information it needs to support civic improvements in our area,” Bachus continued.
“To advance these initiatives, I am calling on Governor Riley to meet with me and our mayors and county commissioners to explain why the Birmingham area is consistently short-changed in seeing our fair share of state funds for massive highway projects,” Bachus concluded.
