WASHINGTON- Congressman Spencer Bachus is pleased to announce today that Mrs. Nancy Hollis has been awarded the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Mrs. Hollis is an advanced math teacher at Spain Park High School in Hoover, and has been in Washington, DC this week participating in events that commemorate her award.
“The entire state can be proud of Mrs. Hollis,” said Congressman Bachus. “As the only Alabamian to receive this award, she is well deserving due to her comprehensive efforts to improve advanced mathematics curriculum for our children.”
Mrs. Hollis was nominated to receive this award because of her professional teaching methods and her efforts to use new technology in the classroom. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher, which is a credential attesting to the fact that the teacher has been assessed by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, and makes sound professional judgments about student learning.
“Children flock to her,” said Spain Park Academic Assistant Principal Ron Dodson. “Her students realize that she is a tough teacher, but they know that she is fair and will treat them professionally,” said Dodson.
Administered by the National Science Foundation, the 2003 Presidential Award for Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded to outstanding teachers who serve as role models for their colleagues and their students. In addition to the national recognition that comes with the award, Hollis will receive a $10,000 National Science Foundation Grant.
