Bachus Announces Law Enforcement Grants

WASHINGTON, Friday, November 17 2000 — U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) today announced the awarding of more than $1.8 million in law enforcement grants for six jurisdictions in Alabama's Sixth Congressional District.

The funding, awarded to Jefferson County, Birmingham, Bessemer, Tarrant, Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa County, comes from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program.

"These grants are especially helpful to our local police because they are not a 'one-size-fits-all' Washington approach to crime," said Bachus. "No two jurisdictions have exactly the same needs for law enforcement. Under this program, each of these police departments gets assistance to address specific crime problems in their communities."

Local governments can use the grants for numerous law enforcement projects such as enhancing security around schools, supporting drug courts, establishing multi-jurisdictional police task forces and funding crime prevention programs.

Under the grants announced today, Jefferson County is receiving $677,147; Birmingham is receiving $677,146; Bessemer is receiving $183,425; Tuscaloosa is receiving $149,864; Tuscaloosa County is receiving $99,909 and Tarrant is receiving $12,886.
